Redefining Beauty from Dubai: A Conversation with Hamza Fakhruddin of Sterling Perfumes
Intro
Dubai has firmly established itself as a global beauty hub, and at the heart of this success story is Sterling Perfumes Industries. From launching homegrown brands in 1998 to becoming a multi-billion-dollar company with a presence in more than 130 countries, Sterling is shaping how the world experiences fragrance and beauty. Joining us today is Mr. Hamza Fakhruddin, Managing Partner at Sterling Perfumes Industries, to share how the company continues to grow, innovate, and inspire
Sterling started as a UAE homegrown brand and then went international. In the early days, how receptive were the international markets to a UAE-born brand?
When Sterling first ventured into international markets, there was a mix of intrigue and curiosity alongside skepticism. The beauty and fragrance industry had long been dominated by European and American powerhouses, so the idea of a global leader emerging from Dubai was a novelty. But Dubai itself gave us an extraordinary foundation to prove that vision possible. The city is a true crossroads of culture, a hub where East meets West, with a sophisticated consumer base, pioneering retail infrastructure, and a spirit of innovation that encouraged us to experiment boldly. Those early years allowed us to refine our craft and develop products that spoke to diverse audiences before taking them global. Being a UAE-born brand quickly turned from a perceived challenge into one of our biggest strengths. It gave us a unique identity, an ability to fuse global trends with local artistry, and an agility that allowed us to stand out in crowded markets. Today, Sterling is proof that a brand built in Dubai can resonate everywhere, and in many ways, trends that work here often predict what will succeed internationally.
The fragrance industry is dominated by long-established luxury houses. How did Sterling carve a niche for itself and build demand for its products?
Sterling’s success comes from a balance of boldness and craftsmanship. We’ve never aimed to mimic the luxury giants; instead, we built a model that fuses creativity with speed and accessibility, making fine fragrance more inclusive without compromising quality. A key factor is our reinvestment strategy, allocating around 10 percent of our annual turnover to R&D. This allows us to collaborate with some of the most celebrated master perfumers, push boundaries in formulation, and adopt innovations that others take years to embrace. At the same time, we’ve built a deliberately diverse portfolio. ARMAF, for example, has grown into a global icon of accessible luxury, while Hamidi stands as a custodian of Middle Eastern heritage and artisanal traditions. Risala, on the other hand, was designed to capture the energy and voice of Gen Z consumers, breaking conventions with digital-first campaigns and bold storytelling. This breadth of offerings means Sterling isn’t just a brand; it’s a fragrance and beauty ecosystem that speaks to every demographic, every style, and every stage of a consumer’s journey. That’s how we’ve not just competed but created our own lane.
What are some of the latest consumer buying trends you’re observing, and how is Sterling responding to them?
The modern consumer is rewriting the rules of beauty. There’s a strong push towards individuality, with people seeking fragrances and cosmetics that feel deeply personal and tell a story about who they are. Gender-neutral scents are becoming mainstream, long-lasting extraits are in high demand, and beauty products are being seen as part of a broader self-care and wellness journey rather than just aesthetic enhancement. Consumers also crave authenticity, brands that feel genuine, not just aspirational. Sterling has been quick to evolve alongside these preferences. ARMAF’s expansion into concentrated extraits reflects the desire for sophistication and performance, COSMO’s wellness-inspired lines cater to a growing market that values holistic beauty, and Risala’s digital-first launches engage a new generation directly in their world. Meanwhile, Hamidi continues to celebrate the region’s artisanal traditions, offering a counterpoint to mass production. Sterling’s philosophy is not simply to keep pace with trends but to anticipate and shape them, offering products that become cultural touchpoints in their own right.
The beauty and fragrance industry is constantly evolving. What do you see as the next big trend or innovation on the horizon?
We believe the future belongs to hyper-personalization and tech-driven beauty solutions. Consumers are no longer satisfied with one-size-fits-all products. They want experiences that reflect their individuality. Emerging technologies like AI-powered fragrance profiling, advanced formulation science, and immersive retail experiences will transform how people discover and engage with beauty. Sterling is actively investing in this future, dedicating significant resources to R&D every year to pioneer packaging innovations, develop new manufacturing techniques, and explore sustainability-forward solutions that don’t compromise luxury. Our vision is bold. By 2026, we aim to have one Sterling product in every household globally, touching a billion lives every single day. That level of reach isn’t just about numbers; it’s about becoming a cultural force that defines beauty trends on a global scale. For us, innovation isn’t optional. It’s deliberate. It’s the lifeblood that will keep us ahead of the curve for decades to come.
How is Sterling incorporating sustainability into its operations, and how important is this to your end consumer?
Sustainability is not a mere buzzword. It’s a responsibility that defines the way we grow and function. Our production facilities in the UAE are already optimized for energy efficiency, and we’ve made significant strides in reducing waste, including phasing out single-use plastics and researching recyclable and reusable packaging solutions across multiple product lines. Where possible, we source ingredients locally to minimize our carbon footprint and support regional economies. Consumers today are deeply conscious of the environmental impact of their purchases, and they expect brands to share that sense of accountability. For Sterling, sustainability is part of our DNA. It’s woven into every stage of product creation, from design to distribution. When someone chooses a Sterling product, they’re choosing innovation, luxury, and responsibility in equal measure. That’s how we see the future of beauty: smarter, responsible, and deeply connected to the world around us.
