Loro Piana Celebrates Its New York Legacy at Bergdorf Goodman
In the quiet luxury world, Loro Piana stands as a symbol of understated, refined, and effortlessly luxurious design. Born in Piedmont, this Italian maison began as a textile mill and grew into a fashion powerhouse, known for its cashmere and vegetable fibers that define modern elegance. I’ve always admired how its materials feel cloud-like, with delicate fringing and that subtle frisson finish achieved through a careful comb of fibers that enhance color and texture.
When Loro Piana opened its New York concept store in 1994 along Madison Avenue, it became a blueprint for future boutiques and shop-in-shops worldwide. This same maison recently brought its story back to New York, this time through a window takeover at Bergdorf Goodman, honoring the city where its luxury presence first took root. From October 17 to November 3, six windows along Fifth Avenue—three in the women’s store and three in the men’s store—were devoted to this rare honor.
Each window became an immersive vignette, transforming the department store into a journey tracing cashmere’s path—from Inner Mongolia’s baby goats, their golden scales, and precious bales to Italy’s Quarona, where artisans inspect fabrics with magnifiers before creating the finished scarf. The logoless Grande Unita scarf, known for its creamy kummel color, subtle thistle nods, and heritage fringing, served as the heart of this storytelling.
At night, a dynamic light-mapping projection animated Bergdorf’s façade, a dancing thread celebrating the maison’s 101-year legacy. Inside, the celebration continued with a curated selection of exclusive pieces—a gray cashmere ensemble, tonal-print cloche hat, shearling micro bale bag, and silk foulard featuring a Central Park motif. These displays captured the spirit of Manhattan while reflecting Loro Piana’s craftsmanship and timeless appeal.
In the personalization corner, I found myself drawn to the Unito blanket and supersize Grande Unita scarf, both available in a spectrum of colors from earthy neutrals to vibrant reds and blues. Shoppers could customize with bespoke embroidery, adding a personal touch that felt uniquely their own. Every supple texture, every precise stitch, reaffirmed Loro Piana’s enduring commitment to craftsmanship, luxury, and Italian elegance that continues to define the maison’s journey from origin to modern-day icons.
