Inside the World of Vera Wang: Fashion’s Bridal Queen

Vera Ellen Wang (王薇薇) was born on June 27, 1949. She is an American wedding dress designer and a former figure skater. Her journey feels inspiring because I once followed her story while working in fashion studies.

Vera, born and raised in New York, comes from a Chinese descent. Her parents were from Shanghai and moved to the United States in the mid 40s as Chinese immigrants. Coming from Chinese elite, her grandfathers were respected military generals in China, giving the Wang family a comfortable life where she was both pampered yet taught to work hard.

Her mother Florence Wu (Wu Chifang) worked as a UN translator, while her father Cheng Ching Wang (Wang Chengqing) owned a medical company specializing in health products. Growing up, I admired how her background balanced privilege with discipline.

As a smart and intelligent girl, she received a strong educational path. She graduated from Chapin School in 1967, studied at the University of Paris, and later earned a degree in art history at Sarah Lawrence College. From an early age of six years old, she trained in figure skating.

Her talent led her close to the US Olympic team, but she decided to change occupation and enter the fashion industry. With support from Vera’s father, she wanted to prove herself. She began her job as a senior fashion editor at Vogue, where she worked for seventeen years before leaving in 1987, just as Anna Wintour took charge.

In 1989, Vera Wang married Arthur Becker. Their long marriage seemed happy until 2012. Around that time, Becker proposed she create wedding dresses. This step made her one of the most successful designers in America, loved by brides, celebrities, and even Olympic figure skating stars. Her spectacular costumes, red carpet outfits, and wedding fashion earned her a place of honor among designers worldwide.

Her designs became part of popular culture, featured in TV shows like Gossip Girl, Ugly Betty, Sex and the City, and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. In 2013, she received the Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement Award. Later, she took a sabbatical, returning for NYFW Spring/Summer 2020 runway, marking the 30th anniversary of her brand.
