Get Your E-Scooter Permit in Dubai Today! Here’s How
Riding an e-scooter in Dubai has become a fun and convenient way to explore the city. With the announcement earlier this month, authorities have introduced a permit system to ensure safe and lawful use of e-scooters. Starting Thursday, April 28, residents and tourists can easily apply for the free e-scooter permit through the RTA’s online platform.
To obtain the permit, riders must complete an online course covering essential topics, including technical specifications, basic safety rules, and understanding traffic signs. The course explains exclusions, sidewalks, cycling paths, and where riding e-scooters is allowed. Riders aged 16 and above are eligible, and no driver’s licence is required for e-scooters, making it accessible to a wider group.
The initiative, led by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), aims to enhance riders’ safety and reduce accidents. Breaking the law, such as riding outside designated areas, can result in a fine of AED 200. As one of the popular modes of commute, e-scooters are economical, low-maintenance, and perfect for people living in the Emirate, especially for short trips between home, work, or public transport.

FINE FOR RIDING WITHOUT DRIVING PERMIT FOR E-SCOOTERS IN DUBAI

Riding an e-scooter in Dubai without a driving permit can result in a fine of up to AED 200. The RTA (Road Transport Authority) enforces this rule to ensure the safety of commuters and to maintain traffic order. Reckless driving or failing to adhere to speed limits (like the 15 km/h and 20 km/h limits) are considered traffic violations that can lead to penalties.
E-scooter rental companies such as Tier, Lime, and Skurtt offer electric scooters via mobile apps, but customers must have a full driving licence. If you are caught without one, expect consequences, especially when riding in non-designated areas or pedestrian zones. Commuters should ensure they are aware of road signs, follow safety requirements, and always wear protective gear like helmets to avoid accidents.
The RTA also focuses on maintaining safe riding conditions, so ensure you are riding on designated routes and avoid unnecessary lane changing. If found violating any traffic regulations, you could also face additional fines for blocking pedestrian crossings or causing traffic blockage in busy areas like tourist spots.
