Etihad Rail Links UAE Regions for Faster Economic Growth Hub
I’ve been following the Etihad Rail project closely, and it’s thrilling to see the UAE’s first national train network across all seven emirates taking shape. Officials’ recent updates show the passenger service is on track, offering residents and visitors a smooth travel experience through a network connecting 11 cities and major regions like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Al Sila, Ruwais, Al Mirfa, and Al Dhaid.
The plan for digital tickets, smart technology, and seamless first- and last-mile connections with local transport providers makes it feel like the future of travel has arrived early. With the first launch expected around September 2025, ahead of the wider 2026 rollout, the system promises a modern, efficient, and connected journey for every passenger.
Passenger Experience and Journey Highlights
Each train will carry 400 passengers, offering spaces to work, read, or relax, making even daily commutes calm and enjoyable. Routes are safely separated from roads, reducing collision risks and ensuring fast travel—57 minutes from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, 1 hour 45 minutes to Fujairah, and 70 minutes to Ruwais. A high-speed line reaching 350 km/h will cut some journeys to just 30 minutes, supporting an expected Dh145 billion ($39 billion) boost to the UAE’s GDP over 50 years.
Construction, Tests, and First Services
Construction progress is impressive, with the first passenger station rising in Fujairah’s Sakamkam district near Umbrella Beach. Early tests in 2024—including prototype journeys through Al Dhannah, trials near Al Faya Depot, and Al Qudra—show how fast the network is moving toward full operation.
Station Locations and Network Reach

The network will connect 11 cities, stretching from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, Sharjah, and the eastern coastline of Fujairah, passing through Al Sila, Ruwais, Al Mirfa, and western towns. Key stations near University City, Sakamkam, Jumeirah Golf Estates, and areas developed by Wasl make the system feel smartly planned and well-integrated.
Travel Times
With the main line under development, travel times are significantly reduced. High-speed trains link Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 57 minutes, while shorter trips like 30 minutes make quick cross-emirate trips possible. Speeds of up to 200 km/h save hours on longer routes, including Abu Dhabi to Fujairah (1h 45m) and Abu Dhabi to Al Ruwais (1h 10m).
Sights and Freight Operations
Watching the rail grow, I’ve seen how freight services became fully operational by the last quarter of 2023, connecting four major ports with seven logistics centres. With 38 locomotives and over 1,000 multipurpose wagons, the network moves goods like construction materials, food commodities, and general cargo efficiently, handling up to 60 million tonnes annually. It’s like witnessing the backbone of the UAE’s trade in action.
Can I Travel from Saudi Arabia to Oman?

While Etihad Rail focuses on freight, it currently supports goods, construction, raw materials, food, commodities, and general cargo transport. The track reaches the Al Haditha area near the Jordanian border, but a passenger link to Oman isn’t available yet. Watching the logistics hubs operate, the scale and efficiency of Etihad Rail impressed me far more than highway alternatives, making cross-border freight seamless and highly operational.
