Dubai Student, 10, Publishes First Book Thanks to School Teacher and Author Encounter

At just 10 years old, Hannah Varghese, a student at Jebel Ali School in Dubai, is already an accomplished author with her debut book, Undercover Mischief Tales of the Homework Club. This heartwarming adventure, filled with humor and friendship, takes readers into the world of school life—a world many young readers will instantly recognize.

Hannah’s writing journey began in Year 2, when her teacher, Miss Hyde, encouraged her budding writing skills by reading her poem aloud to the class. “I loved the process and was so proud of my work,” says Hannah. “When Miss Hyde liked it, I felt even more motivated to write.” That encouragement sparked a passion for storytelling that would grow stronger over the years.

Her love for books also played a big part in her literary aspirations. “Reading so many books made me realize that storytelling was my true passion,” she explains. A pivotal moment came when she met one of her favorite authors, David Walliams, at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. “I’ve read most of his books, and meeting him made me want to write my own story,” she adds.

Undercover Mischief Tales of the Homework Club introduces readers to a group of school friends navigating the ups and downs of everyday school life. The story captures Hannah’s vibrant imagination and her experiences growing up in the multicultural environment of the UAE. “The characters in my book are inspired by the people I see around me,” she shares. “Living in the UAE and attending a school like Jebel Ali, with students from all over the world, gave me so many unique personalities to bring into my story.”

Hannah’s journey is proof of how encouragement, creativity, and a little inspiration can lead to amazing accomplishments. Thanks to her teacher’s support and meeting her literary idol, she’s already well on her way to a promising writing career.
